New England is an underdog for the first time in nearly three years and Kansas City plans to reverse a few ugly Chiefs vs Patriots betting trends in the AFC Championship game.
It’s the eighth straight year New England has played in the AFC title game and this time they’ll arrive as rare 3-point road underdogs, according to BetOnline Sportsbook. [ Chiefs vs Patriots betting urge? Join the club, check out the NFL betting site reviews here ]
How rare? They were favored in 54 straight game and have been underdogs just twice in their past 73 games. That’s some Alabama-level point spread domination.
The Patriots made it eight straight by knocking off the Los Angeles Chargers 41-28 as a 4-point favorite last week. That win was the Patriots’ third straight during which they are 2-1 against the spread.
When they have been listed as an underdog, New England has delivered one upset after another, going 7-1 SU and ATS in their last eight times in this situation.
In the postseason the Patriots are 6-1 SU and 5-2 ATS in their last seven. However, playing on the road hasn’t been kind to the Patriots in the playoffs. New England has lost three straight playoff road games SU and ATS, and they’re 3-8 SU and 4-7 ATS in their last 11.
During their AFC Championship game streak New England is 4-3 SU and 2-5 ATS, which includes losing both games on the road SU and ATS.
The Chiefs made it to the AFC Championship for the first time since 1993 after thumping the Indianapolis Colts 31-13 as a 4.5-point favorite. With the win, Kansas City improved to 8-1 SU and 5-4 ATS at home this season.
Down the stretch the Chiefs had been a tough bet, going 3-6-1 ATS in their last 10 games.
Last week’s win finally exorcised some playoff demons for the Chiefs. They’re now 2-11 SU and ATS in their last 13 playoff games. Last week’s win snapped a six-game home losing streak SU in the playoffs, and an eight-game ATS home losing skid in the playoffs.
In Week 6, the Patriots and Chiefs met in Foxboro and New England edged Kansas City 43-40 as a 3.5-point favorite. New England is 7-3 SU and 6-4 ATS in their last 10 versus the Chiefs, but it’s a different story in Kansas City. In their last six road games against the Chiefs the Patriots are 1-5 SU and 4-2 ATS.
The AFC Championship game trends are heavily skewed to Kansas City. In the last 12 AFC title games, the home team is 11-1 SU and they’re 4-1 ATS in the last five. In the last 12 matchups, the favorite is 10-2 SU.
