There are no sure things in sports betting. That said, it’s probably a safe wager that Thursday night’s matchup between NFC West rivals Seattle and Arizona doesn’t end without a touchdown scored as it did when the teams last met in the desert. The Seahawks are sitting as 6-point favorites on the NFL betting lines.
Americans love scoring – it’s why sports like hockey and soccer remain lower on the totem pole when it comes to betting action in the country. So, if you were told that the Seahawks and Cardinals played to a 6-6 overtime tie in Glendale in Week 7 last year, you’d likely think that game was an utter bore. And it was the lowest-scoring OT tie in NFL history and the only one without a touchdown since sudden-death OT was instituted in 1974.
However, it was a wildly entertaining game with both kickers missing chip-shot field goals to win deep in overtime. Seattle was lucky to get a tie considering it was outgained 443-257 and allowed Arizona to hold the ball for a whopping 46:21. When the teams met later in the year, the Cardinals pulled off a 34-31 upset in Seattle.
The Cards had starting quarterback Carson Palmer for both those games but don’t now as he broke his arm in a Week 7 blowout loss to the Rams and could miss the rest of the season. Arizona (4-4, 2-6 ATS) was off in Week 8 and backup Drew Stanton started this past Sunday at winless San Francisco. He threw for 201 yards and two scores in the 20-10 win.
The real offensive star of that game, though, was 32-year-old Adrian Peterson. Peterson is a future Hall of Famer who set his career high in carries with 37, rushing for 159 yards. The carries were a record for a player of his age. Peterson has been a godsend since being acquired from New Orleans for a pittance a few weeks ago.
Seattle (5-3 SU, 3-5 ATS) really let one get away on Sunday to fall a game behind the surprising Los Angeles Rams in the NFC West. The Seahawks had their four-game winning streak snapped in a 17-14 home loss to Washington. Russell Wilson hit Doug Baldwin on a 30-yard TD pass with 1:34 to go for a 14-10 lead but the two-point conversion failed.
It took Washington 35 seconds to drive 70 yards on four plays and get the winning one-yard TD run from Rob Kelley. You rarely see the Seattle defense allow something like that.
The Seahawks outgained Washington 437-244 but had two turnovers, 16 penalties and kicker Blair Walsh missed three field goals – the team isn’t working out kickers this week. You may remember that Seattle beat Minnesota in a wild card game after the 2015 season thanks to a missed chip-shot field goal by Walsh in the final seconds.
Arizona has alternated losses and wins all season so that would seem to indicate a defeat Thursday. But the underdog has covered the past four in this series and will here.
